Is the city council a paid position?

Yes, our current annual salary (as of Oct 2016) is $6,650.

There was a stretch recently where alderman pay remained the same for 6 years. I believe this was simply due to the fact that the city council was trying to be noble, saying that “we don’t do this for the money, so we won’t vote ourselves a pay increase.”

However, state law says that our city council must set the pay for elected officials (including the mayor). This is a small part time job and it deserves a modest salary. And if we are to encourage more folks from the community to run for public office, we have a responsibility to maintain an appropriate pay level.

So, every two years, we determine our salary for the next two years. However, state law also requires that we go through an election beforeĀ receiving the new salary. This prevents us from voting ourselves a raise, and immediately benefiting from that decision. For example, at our September 9, 2016 meeting, we voted to increase our pay by 2% (which amounts to a raise of $11.25 per month); the new salary will take effect in May of 2018.

This table shows the salaries for our elected officials going back to 2000.
