city staff made my first week great
Well, I’ve been in elected office for a week now, and it’s been a fantastic first week. I can’t tell you enough how kind, caring, efficient, and thorough our city staff is. It’s just phenominal.
I had my orientation last week, where I spent most of my time with HR, the mayor, and city administrator. I also had a city tour on Friday. I toured City Hall downtown, which includes the Police, Fire, Health, HR, Clerk, Attorney, Building, Finance, Planning, GIS, and IT departments (and probably a couple others I forgot). I toured the Municipal Service Center on Sixth St, which houses our Parks, Recreation, Forestry, Public Works and Engineering departments. I toured the Community Center on Sixth St which houses Recreation staff. I also toured Fire Station 2 on Ninth St.
I met firefighters, police officers, nurses, secretaries, vehicle mechanics, engineers, and numerous department heads. I’ve mentioned before how much I love De Pere; but after last week, I have to also say that I’m very proud of this city and our city staff. Lori, our HR secretary, took care of all my paperwork and made me feel like she had my back on everything. Debbi, our Parks Dept secretary, realized that I didn’t have two plan proposal documents that I needed, before I knew that I didn’t have them. I met a couple of vehicle mechanics working on squad cars, who stopped their work for a few minutes to say hi and answer any questions.
All department heads I met were very friendly and offered to talk to me any time I have questions. They all explained what their departments do, and they made sure I had their phone number. I got a sense that they all truly understand that one way they can serve our city is to make sure our elected officials who represent our citizens have everything they need.
Add to all this the fantastic service I received from our city clerk’s office during my campaign, and I’m extremely proud to be serving this great city.
